What are Pop Ups?

Pop ups are ads that open onto your screen in individual window frames. They can also come in the form of a “pop-under” that you don’t see until you close out of your browser and the ad box is left on your desktop. There is also a form of them that are stored on your hard drive and will show up later(spyware). A third type is displayed on a web page, usually on some site you are looking at for information and they want you to pay to join the site to get the information. A advertisement will appear on top of the web page so that you can’t read all of the information below it until you join.

Some pop ups could be adware/spyware and you must be careful how you close them. In some cases when you click on the X in the top right corner it is giving them permission to load software on your computer. It is safer to right click on the task indicator for the ad on the Windows taskbar at the bottom of your screen and left click on “close”. One extra safety step would be closing your browser before you close the advertisement.

Stop Pop Ups

Windows XP with the Service Pack 2 (SP2) update has a pop-up stopper built into the “explorer” browser. ROZtech Computer Services can help you get rid of the those annoying ads by installing a pop up stopper and anti-spyware protection. These programs are free and are safe to download.
