Parental Controls on Kids E-mail and Online Surfing
Years ago there was no such thing as parental controls for computers. Parents weren’t concerned about kids going online. Back then there were no personal computers. With all the school shootings and pornographic sites, parents need to start paying attention to what their kids are doing online.
Most parents that have home internet connections don’t pay much attention to what their kids are doing online. The majority of parents aren’t using any type of filtering software to keep their children away from inappropriate content on the internet. The parent’s indifference could be from a lack of awareness of available tools and believing you need to understand technology to make it work. It really doesn’t take much time or money to use parental controls on kids email and web use.
Some Things That Are Useful To Know
- A better quality version of parental controls will enable you to limit web surfing and the subject matter going in and out of the computer. Detailed logs will allow a parent to review a child’s instant messaging, chat room visits and email. Some children feel safe talking in chat rooms. But whether they are talking in chat rooms or on the street, they are still talking to strangers. Children need to understand this.
- Software programs can help. There are many programs ranging in price from $25 to $50 that allow the parent to customize the controls for their kids. Spectorsoft, Cyber Sentinel, Cyber Patrol and Predator Guard are common software programs that work with all browsers.
- Supervision of the child’s internet use is a must. Parents need to make rules regarding their children’s computer use. They should inform their kids that they will be monitoring the kid’s internet use. If the kids break the rules, then they must deal with the consequences. It’s up to a parent to keep their children safe.
