Maintain Your Computer and Its Life Expectancy
There are many technical ways to maintain your computer. But there are also some non-technical ways to keep your computer going. A computer can be damaged when it’s not kept at a reasonable room temperature. It’s best to keep the room where the PC is located around 60 degrees F to 75 degrees F. Some companies have special controls for their computer rooms to maintain this temperature. Others do not.
The following are some scenarios that can damage a PC: - Too cold – Let’s say you moved the PC and it sat out in the cold for a day or so or you just bought a new system in the middle of winter. If the computers are set up right away and turned on, then the PC warms up too fast causing some components to crack from rapid expansion that can permanently damage a computer. You should let it warm up to room temperature, at least 12 to 24 hours, before turning it on.
- Condensation – This can also happen when the computer has been out in the cold and turned on right away. Beads of water will form which could damage internal parts that shouldn’t get wet.
- Humidity – Moderate humidity is okay for a computer. To maintain your computer and keep it running, extreme humidity should be avoided. Humidity can keep things moist and parts may begin to corrode which damages the computer. Therefore, its best not to keep your computer in a kitchen or bathroom.
- Dry Air – In a very dry climate, there could be a lot of static electricity. This can give a shock to the computer, which can cause damage. Using a humidifier in the room where the computer is will help.
- Dirty areas – Most businesses and homes are clean. A regular vacuuming out of the PC is usually all it takes to maintain your computer. When a PC is placed in a dusty environment, the dust can accumulate on the internal parts which eventually prevents the PC from working.
- Smoking – The smoke from cigarettes can work its way into the PC and act similar to a dusty environment. This can cause damage to the computer. We’re not saying not to smoke, but keep it in a smoke-free room.
- Air Born Oils – If your computer is in an environment where air born oils are present such as restaurants or kitchens where a lot of frying is done, the dust will build up faster inside the PC. This combination of oil and dust will hinder air flow used to cool components causing overheating. If air born oils are unavoidable, the effect can be reduced by encasing the tower in a closed box with filtered venting fans for cooling.
