Hard Wire Networking
Are you considering hard wire networking for your computers? Networking with cables directly from one computer to the next is one option to connect them together. Wireless networking is another. This discussion will concentrate on hard wire (cables) networking. With hard wire networking, computer users on the network can share printers, access files (with permissions) in other computers, play computer games together and use the internet connection at the same time.
How Networking Works
In order to network the computers, each PC needs a network card and network cables. You will also need a modem or hub to connect the machines together. There is minimal cost involved to connect the computers to create a network.
Advantages
- Speed: hard wire networks run at the optimal speed of the modems you connect them through.
- Security: it is easier to maintain security from computers that are not on your network, while still being able to access the Internet.
- Multi-user software: most multi-user software such as bookkeeping or customer tracking databases require the network be hard wired in order to run simultaneous access to the main program.
- Simplicity: Hard wired networking is generally easier to set up and maintain than wireless networking.
Disadvantages
- Cabling: You must run cables from each computer to the hub or modem, this may involve running long lengths of cable increasing the cost.
- Location: each computer will be limited to its location by the access to the network wires.
