DSL Service
Digital subscriber line or DSL service is a very high speed internet connection that goes through telephone wires. How fast your internet connection is depends on how far you are from the central office of the DSL provider and how many other people use the service in your area. The further away you are and the more people using the service, the slower the connection speed. Your ultimate connection (upload/download) speed will also depend on which DSL provider you are using. There are many web sites that you can use to test your DSL connection speed such as
Speakeasy.
You can find others by using
Google
and typing in “DSL speed test”. Most of the DSL providers will have a speed test on their web sites as well. We would suggest that you run an updated anti-virus software before performing the test.
Advantages of DSL
- The speed is much higher than a dial-up modem
- Internet connections can stay on while using the telephone for calling
- It uses the phone jacks you already have
- A modem is provided as part of the installation package
- It is usually less expensive than high speed cable service
- In many cases there are several competing service providers in your area keeping the cost down
Disadvantages of DSL
- You must be within a certain range of a relay station to get the service
- The internet connection doesn’t work as well the further you are away from the central office
- The internet connection receives data faster than it sends it
- DSL service isn’t available everywhere
